I've read that the best time to plant is October but I'm impatient. What will be my chances if I plant some 'supermarket' cloves in a container now; and should I leave in the greenhouse or put outside?

I started growing garlic, a long time ago in Essex, by planting supermarket cloves that had begun to sprout in spring time and I got a crop. So I would give it a go plant them outside about 3 to 5cm down (1" to 2") and see what happens. You may be too late to get much of a crop this year.
A lot of supermarket garlic comes from abroad so is not ideal for UK conditions, come autumn get hold of a variety bred for UK conditions. These are readily available from garden centres or mail order/online seed companies.

For this year, you're really too late and now stuck in betwixt and between. Wait for early Oct, but autumn planting garlic (important) and stick them in the ground. Will be ready next June-ish. If you'd been a couple of months earlier then you could have planted some cloves for harvest in August-ish (perfect conditions!)

In both cases don't use supermarket garlic as they don;t work as well. Some people say they're treated to not grow, others don't but you're better off from a garlic supplier or a framers market.

      Thanks Guys
Might try a coupe of cloves and see what happens - other than that I'll just have to eat this one and wait a couple of months - then order some on-line
