Garlic's looking good.

On the plot last weekend, doing a little weeding arounds the onlions and garlic.
Noticed the huge stem on this one! Hopefully the bulb is the same!

 

If it throws a scape, make good use of it!

It seems i dont know what ive planted as the garlic i thought was softneck is hardneck and has infact started producing scapes!

 

Wow, I really like that garlic.
Mine is rather small andnnot much to look at. I can't seem to get it to grow into big bulbs.

But what it lacks in mass, it makes up in numbers. Seems like I don't really have to plant any anymore. It just keeps coming from bulbs I forgot or mature plants I allow to stay.

 

Ill try and find the label for it, im terrible for either not noting down what im growing or losing the labels haha some of the garlic im growing this year is from saved bulbs and some shop bought but i think theyre the same veriety

I think smaller cloves tend to be more flavourfull like onions, its nice when they grow big but id rather have a stronger taste myself.

Nothing better than a free plant!!

 

Ive found, that if you grow the over wintering types, a good few handfuls of fertiliser around the plants just as they are waking up in late March does them a power of good.

 

I do overwinter mine but i never really feed anything i grow ill have to try next year!

 

Maybe your soil is in better condition than mine, so you dont need it, I have noticed the last couple of year it does give them an extra boost, along with all the rain we had in March and April.

 

Some of my softnecks are pretty fat too, either thermidrome or germidor. I did use some Q4 around them end of March but they are a bit variable in size.

Last year I only gre hardnecks and one was immensely thick compared to the others, turned out it was very rotten at the base and seemed to have put all its energy into the stem . This was it taken 1st june last year. It ended up much thicker still

 

My plot was used as a horse pasture for a few years before i got it, that may have helped a little
