Just read that George is likely to propose further cuts to public expenditure on the 16th March - due the state of the world economy.

Council's are already on their knees - there's nothing left to cut back.

    'Interesting' times ahead.

Majority of budgets can be cut efficiently once maybe twice . After that you start doing serious damage to the whole infrastructure . Don't think many Etonians will notice this though , just us forelock touching plebs

Ah yes, the man that was going to get the country out of debt by the last election time if I'm not mistaken.

Plenty did though. After he failed while in the coalition, the great British pubic elected them to do it again on their own.

I'm more worried about his proposed pension raid, it could be worse than Gordon Brown's tax raid that wiped out final salary schemes.

To remove the basic tenant of not taxing money twice. Prior to Gordon Brown it was always the case that money saved in a pension was tax free and only taxed once you started to draw it in retirement. Gordon started the rot by taxing pension pots (he removed dividend tax relief which finished off the final salary pension scheme system), but George is going to take it much further by taking away the tax allowance when you save into the pension. So you will have to pay tax when you save into a pension and tax when you draw it! It will put off many people from saving into a pension completely.

It's been justified as only hitting the 'middle class' but I don't know how they are defined, if by being 'middle class' means you actually save for your own pension rather than throwing yourself at the mercy of the state then I guess I'm 'middle class'.

In reality it's going to hit youngsters more than people like me nearing retirement and from all classes - and worse still it will mean under 55s will more than likely have to work till they are 75 or 80.

I've always believed that pensions are almost pointless for those my age and younger. The government will always find a way to steal it.

This gets me thinking, I have a pension, totalling a modest but respectable sum. If I could find a legitimate way to access it now, I'd buy a cheap house, and rent it out for a very modest rent. Then if I live to my early 60s, maybe work part time for a while, and live off that plus the rent from the house I'd buy with my pension pot.

Can't do that though. The law says all benefits and profits from the money I earned have to go to the government, either directly through pension raids, or indirectly through profits from the big financial companies that look after the money I earned.

So in essence, I have thousands of pounds on paper, that are worth pretty much nothing in practice.

The sad thing is the UK has plenty of money its just that vast amounts is wasted, spent on useless projects, given away in foreign aid(2.5 billion to Syria alone)12 Billion to Europe,Nato, over paid under achieving local and national mp`s,paper shuffling in public sector, poor productivity,no joined up thinking on transport, little use of natural resources (tidal power),tax avoidance by mega corporations is allowed and indeed encouraged, and on and on....................................................

Mr Kandy is on his countdown to retirement and is glad to be getting out of it all as he has enough on his plate at the moment without work stuff getting in the way and he is seeing more and more pressure being put on him to do more and more and he only has a matter of weeks to go.:sad:They are desperate to keep him and have been trying to persuade him to stay on but we have waited a long time to have some quality time together to do just what we want to do but he has firmly said he is going end of :snorky:

Must dash as I have a basket full of washing to hang out, then need to water the greenhouse, pot on plants and seedlings,do some dusting and hoovering, iron the clothes when they are dried, then sort out lunch for myself and dinner for us both tonight etc etc:snorky:

@Kandy , I retire in 12 months as well . I don't think we will "get out of it" , as the budget cuts must effect many essential services we may need.

@clueless1, I love your idea because as I'm sure you all know we have a small portfolio of property for our retirement, with the interest rates so so low we thought there's only one sensible thing to do....buy some houses, but now it looks the government is going to stop that being so attractive, they are changing the tax relief & stamp duty, so that's another thing they've taken away from the people who try to do the right thing!
My pension which I do pay into really won't be worth the paper it written on with the new taxes they are bringing in....did anyone spot how they bring in a compulsory workplace pension then once everyone's enrolled they then bring in another tax! :dunno:
I don't really know what you do or what the government want you to do....work until you die?....never retire? Still let's open up the gates & completely balls the country up! Let's home thousands of immigrants, give them benefits, schooling, access to the NHS so when 'us' the workers of the country have paid in/worked hard/save we can have nothing! I don't mean to be nasty to the immigrants who'd blame them for coming? It's the system which is wrong & in turn its us who will suffer!
I'm sorry that's really negative! I don't like being negative but in my eyes that's the truth of it.....tantrum over, I'm now climbing down from my soap box!
