I grew this geranium from seed, I think (grew such a lot that year I'm not sure what survived and what didn't!). From my notes it should be geranium psilostemon, and it fits all descriptions I've read except that geranium psilostemon should have black centres and this one has white. If not geranium psilostemon, what kind of geranium is it, please?

Lorna, geranium psilostemon is a large plant, growing to over a metre in height, which has vivid magenta flowers with a black eye. To judge from your photos and particularly from the leaves, I'd say you have geranium sanguineum, a much smaller, daintier plant with finely divided leaves. It's very pretty. There's a pale pink form, as well as a white one.

They have had some brilliant ones at the Alnwick garden, 5' wide and high. I have far weedier specimens but I could send you seeds if you like.

Thank you all - I see you are right! I've grown geranium sanguineum before, but it has never attained the proportions that this one does: currently a perfect dome about 2ft or 60cm high and 18ins/45cm wide, when my experience and descriptions I've read give a height of 8 inches and a spread of 12!

I have grown G. psilostemon before, and it is a lovely thing. But I didn't persevere with it because one of its hybrids is so much better.

This is Geranium 'Patricia', which is a psilostemon crossed with endressii. It really is superb, and being a sterile hybrid it flowers for much longer than G. psilostemon. It will look like this until about October.
