Germinating bonsai

Iv just started 100 bonsai seeds (Maple)
Iv start 50 in coco coco professional plus in a heated propagator and 50 in water with a damp paper towel as a base. Dose anyone have any ideas how long they take to start sprouting?
Or could anyone tell me what humidity I should set them at?

also I have some palm trees I’m doing the same with ? Any advice welcome

Iv started some elephant plant bulbs off in water aswell again any information will help
I no a lot about hydroponics and growing in coco aswell from cuttings , how eva startin from seeds is all new to me ? Thanks Guy

 

Have you been watching Peter Chan's youtube channel, perchance?

In any case, there is no difference between ordinary tree seeds and "bonsai" seeds so you may have put some people off from responding to your query if they do not know this non difference themselves.

There are several huge maples (albeit, not Japanese maple) near where I live and what I have observed is that the winged seeds drop in September and germinate in the following spring (March/April) - about five months time.

So, to mimic nature on a shorter time scale, I would stratify the seeds by placing them in the fridge for, say, about a month before sowing them in moist, well drained compost and placing them some where warm.

The stratification step mimics the winter cold which is needed to break the seed dormancy.

Regarding palm trees as bonsai - I have only ever repurposed some of the palms found in the Mothers Day flower baskets sold by Morrisons. I believe they were Chamaedorea elegans, about 12-15cm tall, which made exellent forest group plantings in oval pie moulds.

The blue tree is a picture of a real tree which has been photoshopped. So, it would be impossible to attain this as an end result.

The triple trunk red maple looks like an expensive tree which has undergone quite a bit of refinement over time.

Note that how a bonsai looks is largely dependent on what you do to it.

Incidentally, seeds are subject to genetic variation so what germinates may not necessarily exhibit the same traits as the parent plant.

 

Sorry, but I dont think you will get anything like that colour.
The pictures are not real, unless the plants have been dyed in some way.

A very big. Be careful. Recently many plants have been advertised as being BLUE. Many are fakes.

Back to your hopes of growing bonsai. This is a very long and tedious process. It entails constant prung of the roots, bending and tying the upper growth. There are many books on the subject. My advice is to visit a flower/plant show and engage with a grower. I wish you all the best.

The often Chinese seed packs available very cheaply on Amazon are usually photoshopped, and can be challenging plants. For example Amaryllis seed are much cheaper than the huge bulbs but the caveat is that it will take a decade or so to see the first flowers. Not quite in time for Christmas then (well, perhaps Christmas 2030)

If you are interested in exotic, fun plants, here is a good website I have used: Tropical Plant Seeds - World Wonders Gardens - Seed Specialist Chiltern's seeds are also good and they have some quite nice things hidden amongst the carrots and cornflowers.

Good luck with your bonsai, it will be a rewarding journey regardless that the plants will not resemble the pictures.
