I persuaded my hubby to build my raised border in the corner of the garden (its amazing what cups of tea and pizza can do ) We've built it on the grass so there is still grass in the raised bit. Can I use roundup to kill it then get rid of it? Or is there another way? Or can I leave the grass in there and pile the soil on top?

Spray it off with roundup, but remember to leave the area for 2 weeks to allow the weeds to die before you fork it.

Thanks Pro. Just got to wait for the dry weather now lol. Or can I spray it and then cover with a tarpaulin?

Are you going to dig it? (Depends how much soil you are going to put on top)

If so I would dig it, bury the grass / "turf" at the bottom, and then cover with soil / compost. The "turf" will rot down and make some useful loam which will retain moisture etc.

I don't reckon that grass is going to grow through a foot or more of topsoil. (I'm assuming its the lawn grass either side of your path, rather than some rough, and more rampant, grass).

But if you have time, and don't mind two weeks of yellowing grass :(, the Roundup thing would be more certain. Don't get Roundup on anything you want to keep :thumb:

Yeah it is the grass beside my path and its not very thick there either as it doesn't like the shade. It also doesn't grow as well as the rest. There's prob just under a foot of soil going in.

I would be inclined not to use round up but to cover it in thick overlapping newspaper, then pile earth compost manure and anything else you can get on top, and leave it over the winter. Come spring the grass will be dead and you will have some really nice soil.

I would still want to dig it (just once as it will be a raised bed)
