I've just moved in to a house where a section of land has been covered with gravel with a few small trees/plants growing at various points. I'm hoping to remove the gravel and begin growing veg on the plot. As the soil has been covered and compacted for a long time is there anything special I should do before setting out my new plot?

Welcome to the forums, Crouchy :ccheers:
I second the suggestion of adding manure/compost to improve the condition of the soil.

      I 'third' the manure/compost advice.

Easier said than done getting enough manure to cover any significant patch of depleted ground. I took advice from one of our good folks on here and ordered a load of spent mushroom compost. It works out a lot cheaper than well rotted manure (unless you can get the manure for nowt from a local riding school or farm), and it contains lime so ideal for veg.

I went for this, last year (or was it the year before):
