Geum not growing

Hi, I had some blazing sunset geum that were planted about 4 years ago. I was very poorly last year so didn't get the chance to cut them back in the autum and only managed to do it in March this year. They have sent a couple of shoots with very sad looking flowers but generally just haven't grown. Have I killed them or just confused them by cutting them back in spring? Apologies if this is an obvious question, I'm a novice gardener. Thanks!
