Figs need warmth to grow into mature trees and they often do well in city centres. I came across this giant fig tree in Clerkenwell, London.

Is it a survivor from a lost garden or did someone eat a fig and discard the pips? There are several in central London, in Glasgow and along industrial canalbanks in the Midlands. The tallest one of all is in Clifford Inn, London.

"It is on the south bank of the Clyde just downsteam from the Dalmarnock Bridge and close to the sewage works. It has many trunks about 10 feet tall and sprouts from the stonework of the bank." That is according to Richard Mabey in Flora Britannica - I've not been there myself.
