 I have hunted in my time & not for trophies, but this is totally disgusting & goes against the laws of nature... If he was a "true" "professional hunter" he would not have taken this Stag, never mind in the rutting season... He can only have been a Trophy hunter... What a waste....... I agree they should be protected...!!!!!!!

I know that deer are managed and culled on a regular basis, but this was still a nasty story to wake up to this morning. I really don't understand people who get a kick out of killing things just for the sake of it. In the idyllic Welsh valley where we often stay in the summer, loads of pheasants are bred just so that they can be blown to bits by people who are into guns and enjoy shooting things. Pheasants are stupid, slow creatures; shooting them cannot be very difficult. Where is the skill? It's usually as much as we can do to avoid running them over.

I heard about this story on the radio this morning and it just disgusts me what these mindless animals called Humans can do to such a magnificant creature.

My sister and her hubby live down that way so no doubt they will have heard all about the killing. The next door neighbour where we used to live goes beating in the Autumn months and kills rabbits and foxes for the local farmers who see them as pests. When I told him about the wild goat we saw in Wales last month he told me that men will even pay good money to hunt and kill them for sport even though many wild goats have been living ferral for a long time.:(

I just hope that if Emperor had been around for a number of years he may have already passed on his genes as the report says that a young stag of good size has already been seen in the area..

We have good memories of being down on Exmoor at this time of the year and hearing the bellowing call of rutting stags and the noise carries quiet a distance:D

:thumb: Glad it did Penny it is an outrage here as you can imagine... The more coverage the better I think... Kandy they say they think they have spotted a young stag that they think is at least one Emperor following on... I hope so...

His place will be rapidly filled by a young stag.

Not the best of stories though.

I am rather disgusted that someone would shoot an animal and then not collect the kill. Why they had to shoot that stag I do not know. The only reason I can think of was money. Pretty damn sick in my opinion.

I went on a stag hunt in Scotland some years ago. There were 8 of us in the group. I did not know any of the others. The gamekeeper had been in touch with the local butcher and checked that the butcher had customers for anything that was killed.

The other guys in the group had absolutely no idea what they were doing and knew even less about guns. It was all a big joke to them and they all seemed more interested in getting drunk and touching up the barmaid.

I was first out with the gamekeeper. HE selected my target and his last words to me before I fired was "If you think you cannot kill instantly DO NOT FIRE". It was quite an easy shot for me, only about 270 yards. (I am an ex sniper). I aimed carefully and fired. Clean head shot, the deer was dead before it hit the ground. The game keeper had one of his men collect the animal and take it away immediately for butchering and cleaning.

The gamekeeper told me that without the so called "Sportsmen", many of the estates cannot survive or at best will struggle through the winter. He raised his eyebrows when I asked him how many deer would be shot that day and just shook his head. 4 others in the group had shots and each one had to be finished off by the game keeper. It was horrible to see and something I have not done since.

Deer do need to be managed, but whoever let someone shoot The Emperor of Exmoor, needs a good kick in the backside. There is a right way to do it and any other way is causing needless suffering to the animals.

I do a lot of rough shooting, rabbits, pigeons, rats, magpies and crows. Where I live they ruin crops and cause all sorts of problems. So they have to be controlled. I will not take the shot unless I am as sure as I can be that I will get a clean kill. Even if an animal is a pest or vermin, there is no need to cause suffering. If it has to be killed, kill it quick and cleanly.

    Chopper.

I am with O2 on this, anyone who kills for fun is a rather pathetic excuse for a human being.

    :old:This report saddened me too.

Like Chopper said, some things need controling as we've killed off the natural predators that would have kept them in check. But killing just for the sake of it is wrong ( & possibly a cause for concern in the psychopathic area )

I don't hunt land animals but I do fish to eat & although i've posted this link on how to safely return mackerelfish before, it doesn't hurt to keep spreading the word.

    http://www.anglersnet.co.uk/forums/Mackerel-fishing-t73303.html

This seemed like an appropriate thread to re enforce the message, thanks for looking & tell everyone else that fishes for mackerel, we'll soon have the country covered.

Had a run in with a lad with 2 dogs at west bay, he was catching mackerel & throwing them to the dogs in the surf & when the fish had got away, he sent the dogs back into the surf to catch them again.

I cant repeat what i said to him but it did involve a lot of swear words & raised voice.

Said on the news that the man who shot The Emperor came from Surrey and he paid for the 'privilege' of shooting him!!!!! There has been a bit of an outrage so unfortunately he now can't brag about his "skill"!!! This animal was special so why wasn't he afforded protection? it makes no sense.

 Well we can only hope John... Maybe there were 2 of them then & no one realised.... Seems a little doubtful though, but who knows... I hope there is another giant myself & if so should be protected.........!

I agree and I know we have to have culling but to publicise the brave act of killing a defencesless animal is a bit upsetting
I remember a few years ago when I was fitting my carpets on a big farm in cerrigydrion, I was saddened when the men there took there guns, and went to a pond in the fields and scared the ducks from the water, hence they then shot them down, I was nearly sick, l love birds and this act I though was really barbaric

I am totally against anything of this kind and find it most upsetting but I guess it will always go on and it will always happen.
It's bad enough about mans' inhumanity to man so what chance to animals stand.
