I've tried planting out a bit of root that's sprouted before and nothing happened, no new roots or anything so reasoned that it needed a bit of root to start with and thought nothing more of it.

I've now got another bit of root ginger sprouting away (you know how these things hide at the back of the kitchen...) and wondered what might happen if I 'peeled' the shoot and tried rooting that. Anybody know if that might work?

Are you talking of a piece from the supermarket - or an ornamental ginger?

Sal is right. I am sure that rhizomes and tubers need lots of heat to start, but don't need any water until they get rooted and some topgrowth.

It should grow - I have grown one before. The only problem is that it wasn't ornamental - and therefore didn't do much. I think I got bored with it after a bit.

I am currently growing a couple of ornamentals, that seem to be much bigger plants - perhaps just older. They haven't flowered yet - but I am living in hope.

As an olf phart and buying 'stuff' on Wednesday (as it's 10% off) from B & Q, I saw there were ginger tubers/corms for sale outside.

        Cheers, Tony.
