Hey I was thinking about planting some ginger to harvest next year! Is it possible to grow ginger indoors in a large container throughout the winter or is it best to plant outside all year round?

It will not like the cold at all - try it half buried in a large pot somewhere warm and light.

You can grow ginger in a big pot indoors. It definitely won't like it outside. It likes to be warm and humid but out of direct sun - the leaves scorch quite easily. To increase the humidity stand the pot in a tray filled with gravel and keep the gravel damp.

Look for ginger with little growing points on it and plant the ginger so that the little points are just showing. It will then push up long, strappy leaves. Feed and water the plant.

Sometime afrer Christmas the leaves will start to die down. Cut back on watering then. When the leaves have died down let it dry out for a couple of weeks. The ginger should be ready then. Good luck with the project.

When I was at the Eden project a week or so ago, I saw that they were growing ginger there in the outdoor section. That said, the Eden project is in Cornwall which tends to get warmer weather than most of the country, and it is in a big hole (the site of a long since closed china clay mine if I'm not mistaken) so it is very sheltered.
