i woke Friday morning and thought,i dont wanna smoke anymore.ive smoked for over 20yrs and to be honest never really wanted to give up before.until Friday morning.dont know why.i didnt go to bed Thursday night thinking,i wish i could stop smoking.ive heard people say in the past that this is what happened to them and thought,no way,you cant just stop like that.i didnt say anything to O/H till Saturday night and didnt tell my son until yesterday.ive been to see the Doc today and he gave me patches (give it a week and they`ll be calling me Patsy off Absolutely Fabulous)but so far, apart from the odd tic and me leg twitches of its own accord, not too bad.so,WISH ME LUCK cos ive a feeling im gonna need it. [IMG] Do stop Elaine, but don't count the days - that makes it harder. I decided after many years to stop and I did. I just stopped.

Not so my very first girl friend - she is only 62 and in the very last stage of terminal lung cancer. :( Its so sad - I have only seen her twice since we parted 40+ years ago, but first love never quite dies. Smoking kills - so stop now

Go for it Elaine! You can do it! How about putting your 'cigarette money ' to one side and then treat yourself to 'somethng for the garden'. Or even more deseved after your eforts, pamper yourself to a massage, manicure or something similar.

Good luck Elaine, I gave up using patches when we wanted to start a family, I don't think I could have done it without the help of the patches, found they really helped. Do make sure you put that money aside and reward yourself for all your hard work. If you do have a weak moment and give in to temptation...Don't feel down, just start again. wishing you lots of luck.

Yes, lots of luck! My elder daughter recently gave up with the help of patches. She was affected by the death of her dad [my ex-husband] aged 54, from cancer 3 years ago.
As Hornbeam says, so sad to see comparatively young people dyeing. The sooner smoking is completely banned the better. I know this would be very hard on people who have smoked for years, perhaps prescriptions would be the answer.

    Well said Liz,

"The sooner smoking is completely banned the better".

As an ex smoker I know this is highly hypocritical, but there is nothing worse than standing waiting for a bus in the rain under the shelter when some ar5ehole lights up right next to you and shares his cancer breath with you.

Well done elainefiz all the luck in the world its the best health and financial decison you can make. If you ever get a craving I found over done toast helped, think it was the carbon. :D

edited for my spelling brought on by nicotine withdrawl :D

I wish I could stop smoking! Think of all that lovely money I would save :D

Unfortunately (or fortunately) I haven't smoked for over 30 years. I never smoked heavily and smoking gave me migraine - the best aversion therapy you can get  - so my chances of saving from that source are long gone. I am however now mortgage free so I save that money instead.

About 5 years ago I had to have a medical for a job and the quack did a lung capacity test and he was amazed - said I compared to a 20 year old. I'm still fit enough to run with a full wheelbarrow and I'm rattling 60

To anyone thinking of giving up the weed, go for it. You have everything to gain! And well done Elaine for taking the hint that your body told you.

I lost my father at the age of 53 to lung cancer..he smoked. Some years later I was delighted that my mum found happiness again and re-married, sadly she has only been married to her second husband for 15 years and we have just found out he has lung cancer..he smoked, but gave up some years ago. My next door neighbours both smoked 40 aday and lived well into there 90's, I am sure that smoking must play a part..some just lucky perhaps.Giving up smoking was one of the best things I have ever done. keep it up Elaine, it does get easier [IMG]

Ps perhaps I should point out I do now have a serious..MALTEASER ADDICTION ;)

Good luck elainefiz, go for it!

Mrs.DAG is also trying to be a little angel, as you may know from a different thread she gave up at 3 0'clock Saturday before last. Unfortunately she is not able to have the patches for medical reasons, so might be extra hard going. Anyway, so far so good, and not a Malteaser in sight! :D

Well, good luck all who are going to/ have given up. I used to work with 2 other females - one approaching retirement, and a teenager arbout 7 years younger than me. We all smoked heavily. I only had 1 or 2 at home. Mr HB didn't like it. One day I walked into the office and it hit me fair and square in the face how unaatractive the other two looked with a cigarette hanging out the corner of their mouths, and how much everything stank. I dropped my cigarettes in the bin and have never smoked again.

Now I'm one of those "reformed" smokers from hell!!! And my oldest asked Grandad (when he smoked) "why do you want to kill yourself, don't you love us?" needless to say, he's now a non smoker.....

Keep at it, and if you have a weak moment, we'll all give you encouragement!!!
