I bought 3 roots of this plant in a packet in a chain store to-day.
Any suggestions for dealing with them, please. Should I pot them up, and if so do they need to be protected if left in a cold frame, or do they need to go straight into the soil now and, if so can they be transplanted when I've had a chance to prepare a proper bed for them?

Hi Jack, I would think that potting them up temporarily will do if your ground is not ready for them yet. Just put them somewhere sheltered and they should be ok.

"can they be transplanted when I've had a chance to prepare a proper bed for them?"

That's what I would do. They need quite a lot of space between plants, and can stay in the same place for 3 or 4 years (well, more if they are happy, generally I take some "offshoots" of mine every few years and then grow them in a different spot)

Thank you both for your advice. I'll cross fingers and hope to be back later in the year posting in the recipes section about what to do with them.
