Gloriosa

Has anyone had success in growing Gloriosa. Last year I bought a tuber from Wilkinson and duely planted it as per instruction on the package, I even dropped by to Martin Fish's road show and got some tips on to go about planting it successfully, yet my tuber just laid there dormant. Its the second time that this has happened so what am I not doing right? Help anyone?

 

Aster, they need very warm conditions.
I leave mine to overwinter in their pots and then repot in late april, in the greenhouse, in a sandy JI no3 compost.
Very little water should be given until growth really gets going.
I grow it in the greenhouse all summer, I personally dont consider it hardy enough to put outside.

Can anyone give me some cultural clues on a Gloriosa Superba Rothschildiana which I have been given as a present.

The instructions are vague although reading this thread looks as though it should stay in the conservatory all year? It looks fragile is it really?

I should add it already has 4 flowers out and lots of buds coming along as well!

Any views would be helpful please!

 

Well manrow, I only repotted my tubers last weekend, so I guess the plant that you have, has been forced to flower much earlier than they normally would, even in a greenhouse.
It may grow outdoors but to get the best out of it it needs to be under glass all summer, I think.

Be careful not to overwater, they like good drainage and rot easily.
You need to grow it on as long as you can before stopping watering and drying the plant off,it will then overwinter as a tuber, which can be started again next year.

 

Oh, pete, I am SO JEALOUS. I bought one last year (three stems at 2 metres plus) at a so-so cost and planted it to climb through the Miroporo and then Bob & Co arrived and it got lost and it was lost .... very sad .... haven't seen it since and we want it because it grows through trees.
