    Hi

My local sainsbury's has Levington compost on offer, 40l bag for £5.00 or two for £8.00. It sounds like a good deal to me but it's peat free - is that stuff OK to use? Also when planting containers should I use a mixture of soil and compost, or is just compost ok?

    Thanks

Never used Levington peat free as I get Westlands. I find their peat free is a bit too coarse for seed sowing.

It would be better to use a John Innes compost for containers as it contains soil. If you use your own soil instead you risk incorporating weed seeds or worse. I have done that myself and got away with it.

That's 10p per litre which is less than I paid for Westlands from Wickes so it seems a good deal.

Lots of deals around on multiple bags and its a lottery as to what you get.

If you want container compost for summer bedding I'd mix in 50% John Innes with the peat free stuff as it will give it a bit more body and a better texture.

Thank you both, I'll get a couple of bags of both and mix them together. I can't believe there are so many types of compost!

Thanks, I'll do that. It's a mine field for sure but worth it to see everything in bloom
