my macaw woke me this morning - screaming an alarm call at 6am!

very very loud and very insistant. i came down and got her out and instead of settling on my shoulder she did several circuits of the kitchen and through to the lounge

i put the kettle on then walked back into the lounge

then i saw what was upsetting her so much

a blooming huge heron at my pond

i banged on the window and it took off

my macaw then quietened down although she is still a bit rattled and excited

i dont know if any fish have gone yet but there is no sign of them - there are lots of hiding places in there so i am keeping positive

I had a Heron drop in on my pond serveral years ago, but the surface was frozen.....lucky for the fish. Its quite amazing to see them jump and take off vertical

    Macaws, better than guard dogs!

Herons are wading birds, if your pond is deep enough and there's rocks around the perimeter to prevent them reaching down, you're pretty safe.
The problem is if once they've found your pond and they can step into it they will empty it and they'll keep coming back. They have "the patience of Job" and can stand motionless for a very long time before striking.

i really do have to have a rethink on keeping the fish safe

twas a HUGE bird no wonder my macaw got spooked by it - shes not bothered by any small birds and loves to watch them - she just didnt like the heron - must have give her a fright

Oh dear Loopy, that was a near thing. What a good girl she is indeed. We lost all our fish a couple of years ago. The heron even returned to take the last one!
I try to place pots around the edge of the pond now.

In Eastern Europe carp have always been a favourite fish, not just with the peasants. I remember, back in the 1950's, that the local fishmonger in London used to get carp in for the Polish families near us. These were families of the Polish pilots that fought with us in the war. :thumb:
