Hi all, just a quick queston. What is a good all in one mulch/compost for my hostas? i have been told to do this in the autumn when the leaves have died down but don't want to use the wrong stuff. Is something like john innes no3 suitable? Im a newbie so want something fairly hassle free and readily available from a garden centre but effective.

    Kind regards,
    Kris.

I normally used well rotted farmyard manure (they normally sell large bags at garden centres ... 3 bags for a tenner) ... I use this on all shrubs/plants in autumn and normally put it at least 2 inches thick

one has to be carefull with some shrubs as one needs to make sure the compost is not against the stem ....

with palms (Trachycarpus fortunei ), I also put a thick layer of shredded bark ontop of the manure

Thanks Dim, i will get some today. I was thinking of putting some down now and then again when the leaves die down as the soil could do with some improvement. I will make sure it's not against the stem of the plant.

    Thanks for your help :)
    Kris.
