Just been out in the garden, and there was a big fat hedgehog just ambling about on the lawn. He didn't even run away at first, then even when he did he just ran into some long grass which I've deliberately left long for the benefit of the creatures. He didn't hide very well though, we could still see him clearly, but he was playing 'I can't see you so you can't see me', so we pretended we couldn't see him and left him to it.

Ours is the first one I've seen here in the 4 years we've been here. They do seem to be elusive creatures. Also I wonder if they're in decline. Years ago it was a common sight to see hedgehogs that had met an untimely demise on country roads, but I can't say I've noticed many for a good while now.

Yes even if you didn't see them wandering around there were always plenty squashed on the roads...I think they are in serious decline and I blame the weather, the winters are getting too mild and they're not hibernating properly and waking up too early ,plus the ones that do bed down for the winter have probably been washed away with the floods:sad:

If you have badgers in the area you wont see many hedgehogs

I remember this from school. Unfortunately foxes have figured out how to eat a hedgehog even when they roll up into a ball.

I haven't seen a hedgie for years! I seem to recall someone once suggested that it would help a lot if neighbours would make a hole in their fences for them to roam more freely. Sounded like a good idea to me.

We have one, for definite. A couple of years ago we had three, one was a baby. I'm not sure how many are here now as I've only seen one at a time ever since.
