As I have read an earlier thread, I got to thinking it is about time I invested in a greenhouse too.

    First question Glass or plastic?

    Second space 8 x 6 available.

    High eaves or standard.

Third anchoring the house, on what?
Base area is a concrete paved area which will mean it needs to move to another part of the garden when I put up the pergola.

Finally cost, not sure how much these things cost nowadays?

All of you out there have been kind enough to offer help to the garden community, so I ask that this be another one for the novices who do not ask the vitals which we all need to ask.:help:

    Thanks in advance.

      Hi landimad.

Personally, I would go for glass, as it's not prone to going brittle and distortion. Having said that, plastic is safer, so it depends on your priorities. I have a wooden Eton greenhouse which came with 'proper' curb stones, but most don't offer this. Before the one I have now, I had an Aluminium 'Halls' greenhouse. To mount it I just used a course of bricks on top of concrete, to which I put some batten. It was then just a case of screwing the framework to the batten, dead easy :) Hope this helps...

      Cheers...Freddy.

      hi
i have a poly plastic one, cost £250 on sale

it sits/fixed on a single row of breeze blocks on footing

plastic for me due to safety (grandchildren) roof sheets can pop in the wind but with "Z" clips that is solved, does has small gaps in corners so seal with silcone

[ame]http://www.amazon.co.uk/Stainless-Steel-Greenhouse-Z-Clips/dp/B000SSLB6Q[/url] link is for "Z" clips

I have a Halls Aluminium 8 x 6 greenhouse with eaves. Because of the winds here, the plinth it is attached to is bolted down to a concrete base. I also opted for toughened glass, once again because of the gale force winds here. It weighs a fair bit but is worthwhile.

If you intend to lay a new concrete base for it, make sure it is slightly bigger than the overall measurements of the greenhouse, particularly if you have a plinth for it and want to bolt it to the concrete.

I paid about £600 for mine three years ago, that included the toughened glass and plinth and it was delivered to the island free of charge, which surprised me. :)

Is 8 X 6 the maximum space you have available? That's the standard size, you'll soon fill it up and wish you had a bigger one. So get as big a size as you can afford (or have space for). High eaves is better also but obviously adds on to the cost.

I've got glass, which I think is better for retaining heat. But it is a worry with kids around, I used to have a fence around it when my kids were little.

It's best to get it positioned east/west. That maximises the amount of sunshine you'll get. Also try and avoid shading from tree/houses if you can.

My greenhouses are aluminium Crittall make, and came with a steel base, which is pinned down with spikes into the ground. That made it much easier and quicker to install.

Cost: I've seen them come up for free on Freecycle/Freegle but you have to be quick. Otherwise look on ebay/local free ads, sometimes there are real bargains to be had. I guess a plastic glazed one would be a bit cheaper if you are buying new.

Many thanks to you for replies.
Plenty to think on and glass seems to be the way forward.
will tell you when I made the choice and photo it up here.:dbgrtmb:
