Making a small area into a gravel bed and putting in some Grasses, suggestions required.
Looking for one that grows 24"/30" tall and another that will do about 18". Colour not that important but varigated is my slight preferance, must also be hardy.

My recollection of Shotts is that it's pretty exposed to the elements - is that right? But even if so, maybe your garden isn't too bad? What's it like from that point of view, as it could make a difference to what you can grow there. If you can get to a library, or get on Amazon's used books, there's a fantastically helpful book Grasses, Ferns. Mosses & Lichens - isbn 0330259598 - Plus, look at the RHS plant selector and type in your requirements http://www.rhs.org.uk/ an follow links to plant selector

Nixon, thanks for that, your memory is good, it can get a bit "exposed" here, that said my own garden is well protected by mature, trees, shrubs and fences from the wind etc. So think it will be ok. Will give books a look.

rhs site, with plant selector is probaly quickest option for specific answers. I love grasses, but haven't direct info on sizes, except that ophiopogon is lovely but small, and pampas grass is probably a bit tall! I partic like festuca glauca, but again, maybe a bit small for you? Pennisetum might fit the bill, but there are lots more, including molinaria. Have fun - there are lots of grasses, and they can makle it, even in Lanarkshire! (An ex-Hamiltonian)
