I have recently purcahsed a rural pet cemetery and I'm trying to repair some of the ground

When I dig a grave I cut the turf off the top and lay back when back-filled

The previous owner didn't do a great job of this and in a lot of places it is just soil (mud at the moment)

Also, where graves have sunk (settled) I don't know whether to try and cut the turf off and pack with soil before replacing turf or level with soil on top of the sunken turf and seed

What would be the best way to re-establish these areas? - By laying new cut turf or seeding? - If so, what is the best seed to use and how do you sow it?

    Thanks in advance, Carl

i was not expecting those two opening sentances when i opened this threadanyway.......
Depends what qualuty you after if tip top dig out level with good top soil and resow or turf if a more nqtural look is ok just cover with soil and sow. I imagine the second option will be your best bet .

either way will work but to maintain an even look you will need to use existing turf. Have you a spare corner where you cut turf.

But I wouldn't do it now as its too wet and too cold. The seed will not germinate and just rot. Turf might not stand up to the rigours of winter as it wil not have rooted properly and water might lay on the surface just below the turf, rotting the roots.

Working on wet soil is a recipe for problems.

Unfortunately the best advice for working on lawns in this weather is to keep off them.

If it really looks unsightly then turf it now and expect to replace. Put up a notice stating that repairs are in progress and apologise.

    Interesting investment
