i have just taken up slabs from my back garden and broke up all the concrete hardcore now i have dug a massive hole and buried all the hardcore (on a budget didnt want to get a skip) all the soil that i dug up i have now spread all over the garden with a bit of clay here and there but not to bad.also the garden is a sun trap and gets very hot when the sun is out

question 1. do i need to flatten the soil as in roll it or do i just lightly rake it over before i put the grass seed down.

question 2. what grass seed do you recommend for this type of soil (clay ish) and it has to be hard wearing because of children and dog but want something that also looks nice and also where would you recommend to buy it thanks

    1. You need to get it level. There is no need to roll it, if you have loosened the soil it will need compacting otherwise it will sink in places. You do this by walking up and down and putting all your weight on your heels. Keep going over it and re-level - throw in loose soil if you get dips. Then spread the grass seed and lighlty rake it in.

    2. There is a fair choice in Garden Centres or B&Q warehouses or similar. Depending on how much you need for the size of your lawn, the cheapest is Wilkos for small quantities. Get a hard wearing grass mixture with ryegrass, that will stand up to the children & dog better.

It will look better if you regulary mow (once its established).

You will need to water it this spring and over the summer if it gets dry.
