    Hi Tosh,

It's OK to reseed at this time fo year, but you'll need to keep the seed watered. Autumn is the best time because the soil temperature is higher, you have more rainfall, and you aren't mowing so often, so you won't pick up the seed. If the lawn is that thin though, you might as well seed now - it's cheap enough.

Without knowing a bit more it's hard to tell why the lawn is thin. It might be due to shade, in which case a mix containing fescue seeds will help - a garden centre "Fine Lawn" mix would have plenty in.

On the other hand, you say the lawn is small, so the problem might be compaction caused by concentrated wear. If this is the case, go for a dwarf ryegrass mixture - garden centres sell this as "hard wearing" mixtures.

If the lawn does take heavy traffic, spend a bit of time aerating it with a fork. And it's not too late to scarify either - but do it before you seed.

Hi Bayleaf - I've given swompy a reply but I think that particular lawn might be beyond help - time to call in the astroturf!
