Suggestions needed please. I'm after a long handled tool similar to a grass trimmer or hedge trimmer, or a heavy duty strimmer, that I can stand to use cut plants horizontal at ground level, without bending! I don't want to remove their roots. I can use a long how to tackle weeds, not a problem. But I've some planting areas that I'd like to cut back, but not remove, if that makes sense. For example, I've lots of hosta that the snails have munched away and want to trim them all back. What tool could I use? Also lots of foxglove to cut back. I don't think a grass strimmer would cope. Something electric to make the job quicker would be perfect. I might be imagining such a tool exists! Any suggestions would be very appreciated. Thank you.

A bush cutter is the next step up from a strimmer. They come in all sizes, some are very powerful and can take out brambles. You would need a lighter one for Hostas and foxgloves, although I would imagine a strimmer would tackle those, have you tried?

I can't comment on the brush cutter but I'm a fan of the Ryobi ONE tools. I've got the lightweight strimmer, circular saw, hedge trimmer and chainsaw. They run off the same batteries, so you only need one charger and depending on your needs, a couple of batteries. The strimmer I have i don't think would be powerful enough for your needs, but they do a brushcutter/strimmer and they also have a 36v range which looks more robust.

I've got the Ryobi One+ brush cutter. It definitely can hammer brambles, but it's a bit heavy so you need to wear the harness with back support for a long stint. Sweeping an electric hedge trimmer down low can do a lot, but that does involve bending unless you have the one with extension for high hedges
