I planted several varieties of ornamental grass in pots in my Japanese style front garden.

They included Hakonechloa, blood grass and elija blue. All appear to have completely died, despite being in the south of England which doesn't get much frost or even low temperatures.

Have they died, or will they be resurrected in the spring?

Hi Mike. I'm also a lover of ornamental grasses and have several. Not acquainted with yours but I must admit, even in cold Yorkshire, albeit by the sea where it is milder, most of mine don't die off. What I have found by experience is that, in general, grasses don't like being in pots, even the Japanese ones. I used to leave some of mine in pots but find that they do prefer the border.

Can you post pictures of yours to give us a better idea?

Both of those are fairly tough grasses, they should survive most things excet extreme drought and extreme waterlogging. They are both almost evergreen so you should still see some life in them. I would wait a bit longer before consiging them to the compost heap and hope!

Thanks to both of you. I don't have a digital camera at the moment, so cannot post pics.

I have quite a few grasses in pots too, including a blood grass which I've put into the greenhouse! thought it was a tender thing, it looks a bit tatty, maybe I should have left it out with the others? they are doing fine and I haven't covered them up or anything.

Interesting to hear they prefer to be in the borders maybe I'll do that this year.

Although one for me anyway has done a lot better in a big pot than the border and that is the black grass, it just didn't do well or look that good in the border, but in a big pot on the patio it has come on leaps and bonds.

    Mike,

    I'm here also ;)

I know it is a very silly question, but have you checked the 'Email notfication' box at the bottom of the 'Full Reply Form' ?
Also, have you got the correct Email address in your profile?

these are the 2 things that would be my guess.

Also re: the Email to me, it is something I need to sort out with the hosts, some people can get through to me on it, some can't

If you ever need to contact me quicker, PM me, I get a notification through GC and respond ASAP.

    Hope this helps

    Nathan.
