    Hi,

Does anyone know the season for picking green cob nuts (hazels)?

    Thanks

Been trying to find out for a while now and no one seems to know the answer. Certainly if you pick them too early the shells are empty.

Pete02's idea is the best as there are too many factors that affect the timing. It is mainly the weather throughout the year that affects it but also how far north or south you are.

A few years ago Mrs shiney and I were sitting on a wall, underneath some cob nut trees in September and we were sharing the nuts with some squirrels. I was standing on the wall picking nuts and they were up in the tree picking their own and totally ignoring us.

They only took notice if we put some of the nuts on the wall and they quickly dropped down and took them. They weren't all that interested in eating the blackberries we had picked :).

Where I walk the dog most have been already taken by squirrels, the bunches are on the ground and the top of the shell removed.

similar with the walnuts, not been taken yet but they will get them before they are ready as far as I can see.

Round here, it is the hedge cutters who destroy the nut crop. They cut the hedges back to the main stem any time from now, well before the hazels are even ready enough for the squirrels.
