If its just straight Multi Purpose then mix in about 10% perlite before potting up the plants. (This keeps the compost "open" which I think helps, and personally I think my plants establish faster too)

Cover surface with a covering of small-size gravel

Water from the bottom - either stand the plant in a tray of water for 10 minutes, or use Capillary Matting [if you do that cover it with micro-pore plastic sheet, otherwise the MATTING will go green!]

Get a decent quality capillary matting (its not exactly cheap-as-chips), otherwise it won't have much "pull" capability, and you should be able to get the micropore plastic from the same place - its how the commercial nurseries do it nowadays, also stops the roots getting such a hold on the matting, and any spilt compost etc. from making it mucky, thus extending the life of the matting.

Mine came from "eBay" - the matting from swiftbuys234 and the black plastic micropore sheet from The Highland Garden Company Ltd. (sorry, haven't got their "eBay" ID to hand, but it should be searchable - if not give me a nudge)

my mum (86 now) always used a sheet of plastis and carpet underfelt or thin foam rubber. this seems to work quite well (she says)
