just wondering if anyone and where in the country do you see wild green parakeets in your garden as there are now so many they are entered on the game list as pests...i am near liverpool and never seen one but i believe you will hear them well before you see them

    Hi there

There are quite a lot in Kent, where I live - although I've yet to see one in my (urban) garden. It's quite true that the noise they make is often the first thing you notice. We went for a walk at Knole in Sevenoaks last summer. As we passed under a large oak tree we heard what I can only describe as some very un-British bird noises. We looked up to find several green parakeets preening themselves. I know some people think of them as foreign invaders and therefore pests, but I like having them around. There's no evidence that they are causing huge problems to native wildlife. And they are very, very pretty. I wonder how they have coped with the unusually cold winter? It'll be interesting to see next season.

We have them in our garden, usually hear them before seeing them. I'm in Surrey and the further west we go towards London the more you see in quite big flocks.

I believe there are a lot down south, Cage birds that esaped at some time and bred, We seen a lot of them in Tererife a few weeks ago about six of them in the palm tree and as you say it was the noise that got our attention, beautiful colours on them , by the time I got my camera out they were gone :WINK1:

There are large colonies of Ring Necked Parakeets in the south, London, Brighton Surrey, Kent and smaller colonies eslewhere. They tend to stay in flocks so they do make a lot of noise, they raid garden feeders and make a hell of a mess! Some places consider them a pest, others an exotic novelty.
They are one of very few that can stand the low temperatures of NW Europe and and their range is still expanding.
Nathan, I think the Parakeets in Tenerife are Monk Parakeets a similar type, the ones I saw in Puerto De La Cruz were Monks.

I can understand farmers wishing to protect their crops but I do wish all the gun-happy people would just shoot each other and leave the wildlife alone. It's mostly people who cause 'bother'. There are one or two distressingly rat-like specimens nearby who I'd quite like to take a pop at.:heehee:
