What are these green rubber monsters, about 7cm long and 1cm across? The three of them have stripped t'other half's grapevine to bare stems in a couple of days, much to his dismay, not that he would get grapes on it this year.

Do they have any redeeming value? If not, how do you irradicate them?

Thank you in advance for any assistance.

eeewwwww ! I don't like the look of those.

A quick search suggests some kind of hawk moth ? which are big eaters and a pest to agriculture.

They are definitely real I can assure you. T'other half picked them off the vine with gloves on ... just in case ... and then put them in a plastic baggy and put them in the rubbish bag (outside one that is, not kitchen one) so they cannot escape and come back to visit some other tasty plants.

Think so, ydd ... they look like rubber bath toys, don't they? and look at that mouth and the little waggy tail!

I personally like the one with the leaf on it's head ... looks like a crown or something, obviously kingpin or whatever.

I have to make a correction, t'other said they have done the damage in 12 hours not a couple of days as I previously said ... no wonder they are so fat!

If anyone fancies one or two ... please let me know and they will be winging their way to you .... sooooooon, and you too can have such delightful critters. [IMG]

Sorry, Marley, we crossed postings. T'other half has now done some research (since their his critters on his grape vine :D ) and he thinks it's the Elephant Hawk Moth also. He also thinks they are large eye sockets with lots of eyes (the dots) within.

Can send you one, Marley, so you can examine for yourself if you like. [IMG]

I think I prefer the beautiful creatures they turn into. I can't forgive caterpillars for being eating machines..!! Stuffing themselves on our lovely plants...!!!!!! :D

Look after them, walnut? You surely jest! I've looked them up in my book and, yes, they are very pretty in their moth state, olive green and pink but I don't think I'll nuture them along. It says they fly May-August and prefer scrub, river margins and meadows ... so what were they doing in the orchards in September ???

I note they are not as pretty as the Oleander Hawkmoth.
