GREENFLY

Hi
I seem to have a large amount of Greenfly on my shrubs / trees etc and was wondering the best way to get rid of and if there is a longlasting chemical I can use to prevent them returning

When i first took over my prescent garden eight years ago,I had just about every garden pest you could think of.Not wanting to spray.I installed bird tables, feeders, and nest boxes to encourage birds of every kind.Within twelve months I had dozens of birds some which I had not seen for years ie thrushes.They have since then taken up residence.There are about twenty nests.Greenfly are now a minor pest, snails and slugs have all but gone,and I am rewarded with a wonderfull dawn chorus plus the added pleasure of seeing so many fledglings being feed by the adults.Try it it really does work

The last time we fed the birds we ended up with rats in the garden so as much as I would love a garden full of birds I am afraid of seeing rats

Hi Ray,
Reference rats or mice,
I only put out wild seeds or fat balls for the birds plus water.
I would never consider bread or similar,as this would encourage vermin.
In all honesty I have never found any signs of rats or mice.
Perhaps I have just been lucky,or maybe having a large garden helps.

Ray we tend to plant marigolds all over our garden as they attract hoverflies who lay their larvae in or around the flowers who then when hatched eat all the greenflies!

Works well for us as we really don't like sitting outside in swarms of greenflies although you do have to watch the slugs and snails as ours seems to enjoy a nightly snack of marigolds! Swings and aroundabouts once again me thinks!:( Hel.xxx.
