Is it possible to move a large greengage tree without killing it? How much can I cut it down before I move it?

How large are you talking about? Greengauge are normally grafted onto a different rootstock these days but an old one I had to deal with was own rooted. The trunk was about 10" dia, the tree about 30ft tall, the roots huge and extensive. No chance of moving it :(

If it's grafted do not cut below the junction or you will loose all the gauge top growth.

And if it is on its own roots, then any scrap of root left behind may well begin to grow, so you would need to remove as much root as possible.
