As anyone ever built there own greenhouse, I have room now for a greenhouse, 8x6 or poss 10x6 I have l have looked at different sites, and seen the different glazing materials that are being used, but I dont know, I wonder if it would be cheaper in the long run to buy one from a garden centre

    Hi Nathan.
I built my own about 20 years ago and it cost about £120 for a 12' x 8'. Most of the outlay went on the wood frame and corrugated sheet for the roof as I managed to source most all of the glass (including an 8' x 3' double glazed panel) free of charge. I'd guess that unless you can find a source of cheap, or free, wood and glass you'll probably be cheaper buying a flat pack.

Being a joiner I'm capable of building a greenhouse without too much hassle.

but unless I had loads of time on my hands I dont think I would bother.

Cant say as I see timber as a long term, trouble free structure.

My old alli one has been around for over 25yrs and its been moved once.

its never had any maintenance, other than the auto vents.

What I would say is, dont buy the cheapest alli one on the market, you only get what you pay for.

I built one years ago when I had an allotment. It cost me a whopping £5. That was for a load of thick polythene sheeting. The wood for the frame was scavenged from the local tip, in those days you could just go along and see what had been chucked. I don't think you can do that any more though. Besides its sort of tradition for allotment structures to be built out of bits, but in your garden you might want something a bit tidier.

My first Greenhouse, now converted into that Shed!, was constructed with mismeasured Metal casement windows and a Crittall door. With the benefit of me being in the Trade, they were all aquired free as was the glass:thumb:

    What a beauty:hehe:
So try a Double Glazing Co...they always have old Aluminium/metal casements and doors to dispose of.
