Greenhouse construction

I'm constructing a new greenhouse which will face east (door end). The prevailing wind comes from the southwest. Should I put the fanlight on the south side or the north side?

 

My greenhouse is also in an East-West orientation.
I have vents on both sides, but if you only have the option of vents on one side then I'd put it on the south side so that it gets good airflow from the south-westerly winds.

 

Thanks. I was concerned about a strong wind forcing it up, but it will have an auto opener which should prevent that. I've also got a Louvre panel which I plan to put on the south side too.

 

I plan to make a net screen to fit the doorway so that the door can stay open too whilst keeping birds (and neighbouring cats) out.

 

I could put the louvre in the back of the greenhouse, so opposite the door. Would that be better than in a side panel?

 

Give some thought to the floor, as in winter bare soil can get muddy quickly. Does depend where you are in the country; in the south east on a well draining soil I got away with it in my first two greenhouses.
Are you planning on growing mainly in pots or planting into the soil in the greenhouse

 

I have slabs up the centre of mine with 3ins of pea shingle either side on landscape fabric.

Even in a small greenhouse two roof vents are good as you can create a through flow, not sure why they only include one.

 

Thanks. I've already got a water butt collecting rain from the garage roof which is only about 15 ft away, so I'm not bothering with another one for the greenhouse. Have already planned the electricity supply from the garage via a hole deliberately left at one side of the base.

 

I've got a couple of hundred spare paving bricks, so I'll use those for the floor - a 2ft wide path from the door. I'm having staging one side and ground space one the other side for tomatoes, cucumbers etc. At least, that's the plan!!

 

You’ll probably welcome having more than one waterbutt if the greenhouse is a new addition to the garden. We have four x 75 gallon butts which are fed by the greenhouse roof. I don’t water the garden but do sometimes top up the pond and the rest is for the greenhouse and pots. I’m quite a mean waterer but as soon as we are down to only one and half full that’s ringfenced for just the greenhouse until/unless we get some rain

 

Here's how I have laid out my greenhouse.
It runs east to west.
On the north side I grow tomatoes and a cucumber.
On the south side I grow peppers and chillies.

I done that so that the tomatoes will grow toward the middle of the greenhouse rather than the plants and fruits pressing against the glass and shading the rest of the greenhouse.
The staging on the south side gets plenty of sun so is ideal for peppers and chillies.
