Hi Dave - I had a go earlier when there was a warm spell during the very cold weather. I emptied every plant from the greenhouse onto a nearby patio area. Thoroughly cleaned the greenhouse - though removing condensation was the main problem at that time. Then went through every plant, cutting back the foliage and removing dead leaves etc. Then sprayed everything for greenfly, mould ets, and put them back. I did the same for a summerhouse as well, where I was overwintering plants too.

I don't know about the greenhouse and plants, but I felt very much better for having done it. They had both been kept frost free, and virtually everything had survived - but several Argyranthemums looked dead. This happens to me every winter. Anyone got any ideas?

Half way working through my plants ,held up by visiting grandchildren ...I will need to spray as I am noticing some greenfly also ...I have never has any luck with Argyranthemums either so don't bother trying now...Have a couple of Sparmanias in flower and lots of things starting into growth ..

Dave - I have never heard of Sparmannias. Thank you - I have just looked them up.

Worth growing? Saparmannia africana I presume.

I will try and take a photo later.. Yes ,Saparmannia africana

I bought a plant a few years ago and first year it got to a good 6ft and came into flower very late autumn,I overwintered it and the following year it was huge.(Have it in a large patio tub) It was then to large to overwinter so I cut it right down like a rose bush ..It overwintered and had many new growths in the spring . This last summer it was enormous but did not flower by autumn .however the leaves are great ..

When I pruned it back the first time I tried some cuttings (Late autumn) I took eight ,4 in each pot covered in a polythene bag . To my amazement 6 rooted . potted in the spring and I used them as centre plants in some of my large tubs .Come the autumn they were still a single stem about 24/30in high I repotted into 6in pots and they have been in greenhouse overwinter ..Still a single stem but now have a flower cluster on each . (I cut the original one back again and tried cutting this year but they rotted off ) May try a couple of cuttings in the spring to see if they root..

Davy - thanks for the info on Saparmannia. I see that Thompson and Morgan sell the seeds - so I might have a go at that.
