Greenhouse

Hello, my first post on a forum is about my new greenhouse. It hasn't been delivered yet but I'm looking forward to getting some seeds growing( if the weather improves). This is anew experience being on a forum but it will be very helpful to read what other members have to say.

 

Well I suppose tomatoes ,peppers and melons ,and some salad crops,but iwould be grateful for any suggestions .thanks.

 

A few of the smaller variety of carrots. Cucumbers. Beetroot.Radish.Chard.

A new greenhouse sound great , I have grown melons before but its getting the right variety for the UK and for the greenhouse , Melon Pepito is a good one to start with (easy from seed and not expensive last time I bought them about £1.30 for 10) you dont get that many fruit, well I havnt but the taste is amazing and you will soon know when ready to eat as when you open the door to the greenhouse the smell will hit you , are you growing plants in the border soil or pots ?

Peppers , being your 1st year I would buy the plants so much easier than seed plus it gives you a couple of weeks head start as they dont start producing fruit till late summer .

Out of interest, which greenhouse have you gone for?

 

Those were my first thoughts as well Freddy plus I wondered what size is it, as this will play a large part in the quantity of anything you can grow?

Then there is the thought of borders, staging and heating which could also play a part in your choice of plants to grow!

Thank you all for your suggestions. My new greenhouse is aluminium-simplicity 7x10ft.it will have a flagged floor so I will use pots and planters, but I plan to make at least one raised bed to grow seedlings in and salad crops.

 

One of my greenhouses has a concrete floor and I use the "Ring Culture" method for growing stuff!

Useful size , have you thought of just a flagged path and the rest gravel borders makes it so much easier with watering as it can become very slippery otherwise

Hello Spruce. Thanks for the tip about pepino melons. Are they self fertile ones? As it is such alate spring it seems sensible to buy some plug plants especially since my greenhouse won't arrive for several weeks. I have started off with tomato seeds on the windowsill a variety called Roma. Hoejoe

As far as I know I think all melons need pollinating but that is really easy as the females will have a mini melon at the back of the flower and the male doesnt , you can store the male pollen in some tin foil and put in the freezer until needed so you will have pollen ready just in case you dont have any males open on the day the female flowers are open , I do this with my daylilys as some flower at different times and I have started to cross my own

Basicaly you leave out of the freezer for about 10 mins then juts dab the pollen on to the female flower.
I never start my melons until the 1st week of May as they do need warmth and light to grow healthy and strong so you have some time on your hands

Also leave the window and doors open on sunny warm days you will have bumble bees coming into pollinate but make sure you dont trap any in come the end of the day
