Why are my tomato plants dying? I have just put up a secondhand greenhouse (given by a nextdoor-neighbour) and planted three different types of tomato plants + a grafted plant (as a trial) all was going well until last week, I noticed that two plants had something wrong with them, they were blackened at the leaf and fruit branch joints and the roots where they enter the soil. the fruit (quite well developed for Lancashire, was also discoloured. I immediately removed these plants and disposed of them. I have looked on tinternet' as they say in these parts. The only things I have found 'scare me to death' (the problem with self-diagnosis is a cold can so easily become pnumonic plague) one site said I had verticillium wilt, another said it was fusarium wilt (both have no cure/are fatal) to tomato plants and lots of other plants. I have grown tom's for thirty years 12 of them here, so anyone know how/if i can save my crop. or even clean the soil (I am growing in greenhouse troughs, not growbags) my one pepper plant looks ok at this time.

    Good afternoon Greeninmanyways*,
:phew: * that was a mouthful. Any nickname that's a bit shorter?
There are loads of Tomato "doctors" in this forum. Like most, they'll probably ask to see the xray (piccie).
Welcome to Gardeners Corner. We've all got yukky bits that we'd never let each other see - you're not alone,

It sounds as if it could be blight. Is it possible for you to post a picture of the problem please? :)

I don't think it is blight. Blight is very infectious and destructive, it will infect all the plants in a greenhouse and wipe the lot out in 48 hours. So as you still have healthy looking plants behind I don't think that is blight.

I think your diagnosis of a soil borne wilt diseases is more likely. It would be interesting to know if your grafted plant has survived because tomato rootstocks should provide some resistance against certain soil borne diseases (depends on what variety of rootstock was used).

There are no chemicals available for the amateur anymore to sterilise the soil. The best thing to do (as I do) is to change the greenhouse soil every year. Exchange it with some fresh soil that hasn't grown tomatoes or potatoes for at least 3 years.

There is an alternative method practised by the organic growers to clean their soil in bigger greenhouses where changing the soil isn't an option, they clear out the tomatoes a month earlier than normal (Sept) then sow mustard which is left to grow for a couple of months, then it is rotavated in and quickly covered with a layer of soil or plastic. The decomposing mustard gives off fumes that suppress some soil borne pests and diseases. Personally I don't try this, I find it easier to change the soil.
