    Hi all

Despite tinkering in our garden for many years (I retired recently), I'm still to develop any real knowledge or expertise, as it has always been a matter of trial and error, with the emphasis very much on error. However, we're having a bit of hard landscaping done at the moment, so taking the opportunity to "start again" remove most of our current planting and replace them with something more appropriate and low maintenance. We'll try to get it right this time, but I'm hoping some of you more knowledgable folk on here may be able to offer me some advice from time to time. Half the garden is on an upward slope - maybe about 30 degrees - (current landscaping involves demolishing some old unsafe steps which run up the middle of the slope and replacing them with something easier to use). We're going to terrace the slope (either side of the steps) with some sleepers and then work out a planting scheme.

My first question (which will be the subject of my next post on this forum) will cover advice needed on hedging, so I'll get round to that soon. In the meantime, the guys building the steps need more coffee.

Many thanks for the welcoming comments. It's nice to be in a friendly place. @Tomcat we live in Hampshire (I've now added this to my profile) and have very chalky soil, which may be relevant when I post my request for advice on hedging later this week.
