When I was a kid, I never understood why my parents got so much joy from working in our garden. To me it just seemed like doing chores.

Skip forward 3 decades or so, and I find myself in London with a decent sized yard full of muddy weeds. My wife and I resolved to 'greenify' this situation. Neither of us had any real experience, but we were keen to make an effort. We did a bit of landscaping, laid down some turf, edged a couple of spots with brick and experimented with a few herbs and flowers. Because the whole area got no sun at all during the winter, the lawn died off in 2 years - and we learned to enjoy annuals - particularly marigolds which seem to thrive under almost any condition.

We now live in a different flat with no garden, but we have a roof terrace which gets good sun in the summer, but again none in the winter. This season we had good success with hanging baskets and boxes. Again with Marigolds, some Geraniums, and other miscellany.

As the sun disappears, I am now so hooked on growing things that I have bought a few orchids for indoors, and I'm researching what other kind of winter plants I might be able to enjoy over the cold months.

I would no longer say that I have a 'brown thumb', but I am still pretty new at this and have lots of questions. Thanks in advance for any help offered, whether it's advice or just encouragement.
