I am mega excited as we are all at this time of all - I have a plot of land for the first time and it is now ready having been rotivated. I am putting my potatoes in at the weekend. However should I put my seeds like carrots, onions cabbage etc straight in or start off in the greenhouse first?

Great news Logi. It's best to sow carrot seed direct in the soil. I find it easier to start cabbage seed in pots and transplant them outside when they are big enough - provide some netting against pigeons they love cabbage! I haven't grown onions from seed for years so maybe others can advise (I grow onions from sets, they are by far the easiest and most reliable way for me)

I always direct sow beetroot, although it appears you can transplant them.

Just a word on onions, I've bought some dodgy onion sets in the past and have recently gone back to growing from seed.
I put a couple of seeds or so in each compartment of one of those trays with divided sections, in the greenhouse, and plant out around mid April or when ready.
    It works OK.
