    Hi people,
I'm off to Wilcos tomorrow to stock up on essentials. I am thinking of using grow bags for my tomatoes, this year? The Tomatoes will be housed in two small blow away greenhouses and possibly outside on patio.

Last year was a disaster as all my plants got blight, both inside and outside. The soil I used was rubbish and I've learned from that! But, this year I'm considering either grow bags or cleaned tubs in the greenhouse filled with compost. I'm hearing mixed thoughts about grow bags and would love to know your thoughts and experiences of the above. Also any recommendations on seeds? Mainly cherry type as a preference. Many thanks in advance. Russ.

My dad uses grow bags in his greenhouse, usually with good success. Only trouble is sometimes the toms don't ripen properly, but that's possibly more down to the northern location, or the fact that several panes of glass that have broken over the years have been replaced with boards :)

Grow bags are shallow though, so yu need to pay close attention to feeding and watering.

What I do which may be wrong but seems to work ok ish for me is:

Get 8 flower pots for a pound from Morrisons, drill drainage holes in them. Add either compost or growbag contents with added water crystals into these pots and then I can easily move them around in or out of my blowaway greenhouse. Growbags Ive found to be too compacted and you cant add water crystals to them either.

I was going to say that Tam.

Use grow bags but put the compost in pots.
So much easier to water and the roots wont get so hot if in full sun.
Would only use two pots at the most per grow bag.

Not sure it will have much effect on the chances of blight though, that is usually down to weather/growing conditions.

I use Levingtons giant tomorite growbags as they are larger than the normal ones, then I use growpots on top.

Thank you all. Think I will try both. I do love to experiment. He he. I'm liking the look of the grow pots. More research required. Cheers.

Last year I used Wickes 70L MPC as growbags, stacked one of top of the other with the adjoining faces slit open, to make a really deep growbag. It was still difficult to get the watering right which is the biggest problem with growbags so I won't be repeating again, I'm back to growing in the greenhouse soil border.

I do similar to John but don't have a problem with lack of depth.

I also used the Wickes 70 litre bags (works out a lot cheaper than Gro Bags as they were £14.56 for 4) but then cut them in half and stood them upright. If you think there is still not enough depth to them you can top them up with some more compost.

What I did the other year was buy grow bag and put then into wheelbarrow cut the grow half way to make 2 pots out of the grow bag put some holes in bottom for drainage and then refill both halves with the contents of the growbag. Therefore growing in the compost from a growbag, but having a lot more depth.
