Hi Veg-and-flower-man, it depends very much on what size grow bags you are using and if you gave them a good shake up first to loosen up the compost within them. The cheapest grow bags are really not adequate in depth for tomatoes and the pot method would have been the best solution to the problem. I have some tomatos doing really well at the moment in grow bags but they are the 70cl compost bags and are quite a bit deeper than ordinary grow bags. If I were using ordinary grow bags to grow tomatoes then I would have cut a grow bag in two and put them on end and grown a single tomato in each half. That way they would have sufficient depth of soil to root properly. I don't wish to curb your enthusiasm for growing them but I would think again before they get settled in their current positions.

You probably may not have seen my posting on another thread where you put a photo of the tomatoes. I said there that they seemed to be perfectly fine as the grow bags you are using were designed for the purpose.
