Having woke up this morning to find my grow house scattered across my lawn I think I am going to have to bite the bullet and replace it. It looks like the runner for the doors has got bent and if I can not get that back in then I am not going to be able to get it back together securly (luckily I do not have many plants in it at the moment so I have not lost them)

My existing grow house was a polycarbonate one - came from Ferndale Lodge and much as it was not cheap I always was a bit worried about it surviving the wind I get in my garden as it felt flimsy.

I have been looking on line (waiting for the sleet to stop so I can go back outside to try and fix the existing one) and I fancy the look of the Halls Wall Garden 62 which is a glass lean to grow house. Does anyone have this or a similar one and if so any comments?

Also if anyone has it - does it have a back? I will be leaning it up against a fence but I need it to have a back and it is hard to tell from the photo on line if it does or not.

Anyhow - the sleet has stopped and the sun is almost out so I am going out to investigate further.

I do sympathise with you Black Cat. It was very windy in Suffolk and I lost several branches from my trees. My greenhouse is timber and it is free standing so I have no experience of a lean to. Good luck with your investigations - you should be able to get some bargains this time of year.

After thinking about it a bit more I think I am going to go for two smaller - or rather lower - lean to grow houses as then they will be lower than the fence that I have them on and the wind break of trees I have so that might help stop them getting hit by the wind so much.

I have found one that I think is ideal (and I think are the same make as my coldframes) they are wooden framed which I think looks better so I am spending ages hunting for the cheapest place selling them (so far I have found them from £90 to £180 on different websites)

That's quite a price difference, BC!
You have all my sympathy - we had damage too, mostly glazing, but a roof window got wrenched out too, so that's warped.

    Good luck in your search!

Why not look for a second hand unwanted aluminium greenhouse...with a bit of ingenuity it could be converted into a lean-to house if you so wish.

Our local paper has greenhouses for sale in the miscellanoues sales most weeks for around £50...You have to be prepared to dismantle and remove them though. The trick is to take pictures before you dismantle so that you have an idea of where everything goes...when its all in bits it can be daunting.

I had one given to me a couple of years ago which I took down and moved and I have another dismantled at the moment and I am in the process of getting the site ready for its rebuilding.

This too was given to me...a 10' x 8' no less simply because they wanted the room.

Look and ask around...you may be pleasantly surprised.

My lean to is just in the process of going upand new with instructions it is complicated - yes even for M Waco who is a very skilled engineer, not sure I would like to faf on with a second hand one, but no doubt it can be done well with time and patience.

I am not sure I would like to build one against a fence either, what happens if the fence blows down?

    Good luck!

PS just posted a picture of our lean-to going up in the project section

Unfortunatly I do not have space for anything bigger than the lean to and having it against the fence is the only place it can go in the garden. Not ideal I know but better than nothing!!

    For The Attention of Petal.
Have only just read your comment about the wind.
Sorry, must have left the door open. We are like that in Norfolk.

Fancy, check your house contents insurance, very often it will cover sheds, fencing and greenhouses. David.
