    Is this possible?

    Hi,

I'd love to give our family and friends packets of seeds or saplings to grow plants for us that will flower in time for our Wedding in June next year.

I don't know much about gardening at all so all advice will be much appreciated, like what kind of plants will grow in 7 months and also the ones that will flower in June.

I am thinking the wedding will be like an english country garden so the types of flowers I would quite like are roses, lavender, hydrangea, peony etc... which would all be mixed together in various vases.

Advice on growing the about would be much appreciated and other plant/flower suggestions much welcomed.

    Thanks,
    Jo

This is a wonderful delusional wish on your part. But have you really "planned" a wedding. Any thing you can do to pass a stress over to someone else is so important. Trust me, it is stressful to plan a wedding. Just go find yourself a venue that offers this English Country garden as your backgrown to this vision you have . Most of those plants you mentioned take a couple years to bloom. Your statement "I don't know much about gardening is right on. Then get a good florist to have vases with those flowers you like in them.

      Welcome to Gardeners Corner Jo.
Hmmmm......I think you'd be very lucky to get this together for June. Most plants are only just starting to come into flower then and certainly wouldn't be in full bloom. Redstar has said that the plants you have mentioned will take a couple of years to bloom and you would probably have to buy these as full grown shrubs in the first place.

I think the safest thing for you to do is abandon the idea. Sorry! :)

        Hi Redstar,

Thanks for your post although it's not the most helpfull of answers I was expecting.

Rather than our being wedding like most I'd like it to be personal, cheap and if possible green. I don't see any harm in trying to grow our own flowers and if we fail I may have to resort to a trip to Tesco for the odd bouquet to fill some empty vases, but I'd like to try a least.

Any other suggests anyone? If not the above then Sweet Pea/Tulip?

        Thanks

My Sweet Pea bloomed pretty late this year. Tulips are possible... and quite a beautiful flower, too!

There could be ways to delay/harvest the flower, but I'm not an expert!

        Good luck with your wedding!

Well JOMC, I am a total advocate for an inexpensive personnal wedding. Both mine were, and done well.

Seeds are a chore to germinate even for the experienced gardener, much specific tending needs to be done to achieve success. So to give your family that chore is interesting, unless they have tended seeds before.
Right now, I just thought of June blooming Alliums (bulbs). There are some that are so precious, that given a nice pot/ size depends on the bulb, some are small it is possible you can time it, or not. Look up Alliums and check them out. Perhaps you can get several smaller ones to make for a nice effect in one pot. However, pots can be expensive etc. and then there is the soil and the cost of the bulbs.
But there are wholesale bulb companies that will sell you a large amount for little cost in comparison.

The easiest way to cut cost in wedding planning is to only invite "those who really cared about you all your life".

Was just thinking........ you could go out and collect some interesting seed heads such as teasels and spray paint them. I've made some lovely table centerpieces using different things like that.

you can grow sweet peas now and then they will flower early, it depends on the weather in spring what will flower as well, late June would be better.

There are hardy annuals that you can plant now and should flower but I did try that this year and none come up! cornflowers were one. Maybe worth sowing them in pots first

It maybe a bit stressful worrying whether they will come out in time.

Cbcarolyn, that was exactly my point, "It maybe a bit stressful worrying whether they will come out in time".

Planning any wedding, no matter how inexpenisve, can be stressful. The less stress to avoid the better.

              Hi jomc,

the safest way to go ahead with your plan -unless your relatives all have an established garden- would be a lot of us from gardeners corner to come to lunch the day before and each of us would bring some flowers. But probably is a bit too far fetched...

Anyway brilliant idea - I would do the same.:dbgrtmb:

It is worth noting that green can be used as well - I pick bits off my weigela nana variegata all the time to put in a vase with a few flowers and it is really pretty, if you lived near I would offer some :)
