No I've never tried one. Does they need to be kept indoors?

Try to keep the humidity as high as possible Joolz, we used to keep it at 98% on the farm, and warm enough to be working in a T shirt even in the snow.

I've been tempted several times ... mostly with close to zero success.

          My thoughts are:

The ones sold in Sheds may have sat there for eons ... and may have been subjected to either very high, or low, temperatures. I think getting a Fresh kit is key.

Some vendors, such as Marshalls, that produce the kits don't (well, "didn't" last time I looked) sell them online (weight/cost of shipping I suppose), so hard to be sure you are getting one of their kits "fresh".

I bought [mail order] some fancy mushrooms from Suttons, that was quite successful.

The one I have been tempted by, but not actually tried myself, is

I grew a yellow oyster mushroom kit just before xmas, followed the instructions and within days I had the first signs of mushroom clusters. I uncovered them (as stated in my instructions) and the dried out but I soon had new clusters form. These grew rapidly and I grew somewhere in the region of 100 mushrooms. Far too many to use in one go so I dried them in the oven and now have them in a kilner jar, I just rehydrate in water when required.

I am definitely tempted to grow some more, my local garden centre sells mushroom pawn and Special boards to grow them on. Think I might nip out and grab some today!

              Joolz

the airing cupboard is best put the whole thing into a bin bag , works a treat .

Temp is the crucial part as you have realised, but sounds as if it just about to start

Yes we have grown these from a kit bought from our local gc and have had some sucess with them.We only paid £5 for ours reduced from £8.99 Before xmas and had the delight of fresh mushrooms with my bacon xmas morning. We followed the instructions supplied with the box putting the box in the airing cupboard first and then progressing to a cool room and sprayed with the water, making sure not to wet the compost toomuch,or letting it dry out too much.Your mushrooms in the photo will get muchbigger, but be sure to keep an eye on them as they will grow large quiet quickly. When you come to harvest them gently twist each one at the base, whilst holding the cap of the mushroom.I used to take photos of them at various stages of growth and after harvesting as they are part of our veg growing.Hope you enjoy them.
