"Whats the best time to sow grass seed?"

I am 100% in the Autumn camp ...

    • Soil is warmer
    • Weeds grow much faster in Spring-sown, and compete
    • Has the whole winter to establish, so much more "lawn-like" the following year
    • Can't use lawn herbicide for 6 months - not a problem for Autumn sown

If you need some grass sowing, then it can be done at anytime of the year. I have sown grass seed and had good results when not expecting it. You have just got to remember to water it in a dry spell, but not as much as turf.

If it is for the allotment, where you would be wanting to walk on it during the summer months, then I would perhaps leave it to the autumn. Alternatively, you could always sow some in seed trays, and create your own turf to put down.

    Hope this Helps!

You can sow now, but you must water it lightly unless rain is expected and keep this up for the week or so until it germinates.

Take time to prepare the soil, fork it and break it up with a rake then tread it down and lightly rake then seed.
