How easy is it to grow a new tree from a fir cone?

We had a really nice imported Germany fir tree that died.

I can't find anything similar in the garden centres / nurseries near us so wonder if I can grow one from a few cones that came from the original tree?

If the cones are closed up then more than likley yes if there open have a quick look inside and see if you can find any seeds they should look like small wafer discs with a brown bit on from what I can remember:scratch:

also if you have any pictures of the tree (dead or alive) I'm sure we can have a good guess at what type it is:gnthb:

I've done this. As the cone dries and matures it should open up. Inside will be seeds, they look like pine nuts. Sow them and with luck they will germinate. I sowed mine in a pot of ordinary potting compost. Most germinated but I lost most at the potting on stage. After a couple of years I was left with only one but it is now a fine specimen in my garden, upwards of 5 metres......it does take time though. Good luck.

    Thanks for the information.

I'll see how I get on.
