Last year I planted some pips from a Pink Lady apple and one is now healthy
    looking and 15" tall .

If I plant it on to a large pot will it restrict it's size? I do not want a full size tree
in the garden but interested to see if it ever produces apples of any sort. I know
it will not produce true to type, just growing it for a bit of fun.

No problem in growing it in a pot. Apple trees do not have to grow to be large (even planted out) and there is no reason why it shouldn't produce fruit. I have one just planted out in the ground this year, grown from seed by wife's sister :)

Thanks whis4ey - I am not just wasting my time then. It will be interesting to see what it produces but expect it will be a few years before any results?

I would suggest that you do not make the pastry for your first apple tart for a few years yet LOL

I thought for some reason you wouldn't get good apples if you grew them from seed....

It's pot luck what they come out like, depends on what they were polinated with.

The ones that you often find by roadsides grown from abandoned pips are called Wildlings, some are good some are bitter, worth checking a tree if you find one, I know quite a few good ones around here, trouble is, so does Scrungee :th scifD36::snork:

I believe that an apple grown from a pip can be considered your exclusive right and you can name it as you wish - but as Zigs noted above these pip grown apples can disappoint - but who knows? you may get "@jjordie orange pippin"

            Best of luck !!

I was told on an apple growing course many years ago that the only seeds that stood a good chance of producing similar offspring were those from Blenheim Orange apple trees.

                Interesting replies - thanks.

Mr C you say from the 70s???
well if that's the case I had better add it to the grandchildren's inheritance
'cos I might not be here to claim exclusive rights. :snork:

I googled Wikipedia and find that Pink Lady apples have quite a history.
they are not just any old apple ------

'Cripps Pink' is a cultivar of apple, from which apples meeting quality standards can be sold under the trade mark name Pink Lady. 'Cripps Pink' was originally bred by John Cripps at the (then named) Western Australia Department of Agriculture by crossing the Australian apple 'Lady Williams' with a 'Golden Delicious' to combine the best features of both apples.

Wonder what my pip will produce (if anything)..............
