I decided to try and grow kiwi from seed a month or so back and got some pretty good success with germinating the seeds. I have about 15 seedlings across 4 or 5 pots now with varying degrees of success - No true leaves yet though.

The variety I've grown from are Hayward, which according to T&M, are self sterile female plants. I've also read on one site that when they (an kiwi plant of unstated variety) reach their first flowering year, you can determine which are the male and female plants.

Has anyone grown from seed on here and had any success? Are all of my seedlings going to be female and I'm gonna have to try and track down a male plant to fertilise them?

Ok so it's been about a month since I started this thread and hasn't it done wonderfully. No, the thread has been a total failure up til now, but the kiwi, I'm rather happy with. Considering I started them off on a piece of tissue paper on a windowsill, these are the ones which have survived and done the best. Still no idea which are male and which are female.

If only I could keep up with every thread on the forum :heehee:

Self fertile surely. Or self fertile hermaphrodite even?

Surely T&M have answered that for you

I start a large percentage of my seeds like this now. Better still are the cotton wool make up pads.

          Nice one :)

I had a Kiwi a few years back, only ever grew tiny fruits though, despite being in full sun :noidea:
