My mum has just been given what I beleive is a phalenopsis (spelling?) orchid for her birthday. Being the No.1 gardener in the family, I have been asked to find out how to look after it. I have never grown orchids, but heve heard they can be tricky to look after.

Can anyone ive me some advice as to how to look after this orchid, please. Or rather how NOT to kill it, since I dont have much luck with houseplants!

    Thanks

Hi GA. rather than rambling on myself (after all Mrs Sarra is the one who grows the orchids round here) I'll just refer you to this site:

    Orchid growing

It really is a very simple guide to growing orchids. Not just phalaeonopsis but all the others as well. Just one word of warning - DON'T GET THE BUG. It's just too expensive. :D :D ;)

I've found the Phalaeonopsis grows best in the bathroom, as it likes diffused light, and humidity. They're not that expensive these days, and some can be quite spectacular.

I'm sure i'd manage to kill one, mind :(

Seriously. They hate tap water. Mist regularly with RAIN water. That's the moisture they like.
